Even without the happy-ever-after "ending" (when do stories ever really end?) result we wish for, this story is a "success" and not just because your decisions were good ones. You gave him a step in the chances-for-life column. Let us pray that somehow he recognizes your love and your struggle to fight for him and finds/creates the courage to take the next step instead of going to a different hospital to snag a hold-over.
I admire your struggle and your courage.
[P.S. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to reconcile the whole "do no harm" thing with problems like addiction and the power of the BUSINESS of medicine -- the big pharmaceutical companies, etc. that have pathologized nearly everything and perhaps essentially created these horrific dependencies. I do know that it was within the system that he became addicted and now he tries to game the system to feed his addiction. It's a horrible situation. And he may well become a heroin junkie because it's just easier to get. Which is even sadder. I have no idea what you can do for someone like that because at this point you're not dealing with a person, you're dealing with a horrible addiction.
